My Review

“Dune” is the latest movie version of the 1965 science fiction novel by Frank Herbert, taking on the first half of the story, billed on screen as “Dune: Part One.”  Producer-director Denis Villeneuve (“Blade Runner 2049” 2017) does not hesitate in tackling the massive story, diving right into the tale of Paul Atreides and his family’s take-over of the planet Arrakis, a desert planet filled with sand dunes and home of a lucrative business dealing with a product called “spice.”

He managed the enormous amount of information quite efficiently, although it did appear to be running out of gas in the final quarter of the two-and-a-half hour picture.  The mostly-excellent screenplay was penned by Villeneuve, Eric Roth, and Jon Spaihts,

Newcomer Timothee Chalamet delivered an effectively low-key performance as Paul Atreides; we expect to see more of him in the future, The massive cast also includes Rebecca Ferguson, Oscar Isaac, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgard, Dave Bautista, Zendaya, Charlotte Rampling, Jason Momoa, Javier Bardem, Stephen McKinley Henderson, Chang Chen, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Benjamin Clementine, David Dastmalchian, Babs Olusanmokun, Golda Rosheuvel, and singer Marianne Faithful as a voice heard by Paul in a dream.

The producers went first-class in selecting Hans Zimmer to compose the sound track for the very watchable “Dune: Part One,” which was a definite hit at the box office for Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures.  A sequel called “Dune: Part Two” is set for release in March, 2024.
