My Review

When Frank Herbert’s 1965 novel “Dune” finally reached the big screen in 1984, the result was a visual feast that we have come to expect from executive producer Dino De Laurentiis. His lavish production tells the story of young Paul Atreides and his prophetic dreams and visions. Kyle MacLachlan plays Paul who ends up far from his home planet of Caladan on the desert planet called Arakis, or Dune.

The supporting cast includes Jurgen Prochnow and Francesca Annis as his parents, Sean Young as his girl friend, Jose Ferrer as the Emperor of the Known Universe, Virginia Madsen as his daughter Princess Irulan, Linda Hunt as housekeeper Shadout Mapes, Sian Phillips as the Reverend Mother Mohiam, as well as Max von Sydow, Dean Stockwell, Patrick Stewart, Sting, Freddie Jones, Alicia Witt, Kenneth McMillan, Silvana Mangano, Brad Dourif, Leonardo Cimino, Jack Nance, Richard Jordan.

Director-screenwriter David Lynch (“Eraserhead” 1977) did an outstanding job creating the 137 minute movie with producer Raffaella De Laurentiis. However, the very dramatic and watchable “Dune” only broke even at the box office for the Dino De Laurentiis Corporation and Universal Pictures.
