“Drunk Parents” is a comedy movie about a couple facing a series of financial challenges. His once successful business is on the verge of bankruptcy, their house is in foreclosure, and they have just sent their daughter to an Ivy League college. The couple escape their financial woes by consuming generous amounts of red wine. The predictable comedy proceeds from there, with acceptable direction by Fred Wolf (“Strange Wilderness” 2008) and a formulaic script by Wolf and Peter Gaulke.
The celebrity-laden cast members do turn in satisfactory performances. This includes Alec Baldwin and Salma Hayek in the lead roles, Michelle Veintimilla as their daughter, as well as Jim Gaffigan, Ben Platt, Treat Williams, Kelly AuCoin, Sasha Mitchell, Will Ferrell, Colin Quinn, Joe Manganiello, Natalia Cigluiti, Aimee Mullins, Dan Soder, Olivia Luccardi, Aasif Mandvi, Scott Mescudi as the tow truck driver, and Mark Gessner as special agent Chad Milhouse.
The marginally watchable “Drunk Parents,” which does qualify as acceptable escapist programming, is a production of Bron Studios, Creative Wealth Media, Vertical Entertainment, and DirecTV Cinema. It was released mainly through DirecTV Cinema streaming and very limited theatrical viewing back in 2019.
