My Review

“Dreamgirls” is a musical drama film loosely based on the 1960’s Motown group Diana Ross and the Supremes. Director-screenwriter Bill Condon (“Beauty and the Beast” 2017) put together a film that on the surface contains glitzy production values, but in fact has a predictable story, underwhelming music, mediocre acting, and horrific singing performances.

The stars include Beyonce Knowles, Jennifer Hudson, and Anika Noni Rose as the Dreamettes, Jamie Foxx as their manager, Eddie Murphy as a leading R&B singer, as well as Danny Glover, Loretta Devine, John Lithgow, John Krasinski, Jaleel White, Keith Robinson, Sharon Leal, Esther Scott, and Ken Page in his final film role as Max Washington.

The unwatchable and totally boring nightmare “Dreamgirls” did have modest success in theatrical release for DreamWorks Pictures and Paramount Pictures. It was nominated for eight Academy Awards, winning two: Best Supporting Actress (Hudson) and Best Sound Mixing. The non-winners were Best Supporting Actor (Murphy), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Original Song (three nominees, all penned by Henry Krieger, who wrote the original 1981 Broadway musical of the same name).
