The popular English television show “Downton Abbey” has come to the big screen. Appropriately titled “Downton Abbey,” the film has retained the flavor of the series thanks to producer-screenwriter Julian Fellowes, the creator of the show that ran for six seasons on the BBC, 2010 to 2015.
The story is set in 1927, about a year after the series ended. The big event is the upcoming visit to Downton of King George V and Queen Mary (grandparents of Elizabeth II), on a royal tour of Yorkshire, played by Simon Jones and Geraldine James. American director Michael Engler capably handled this project with most of the scenery filmed at Highclere Castle in Hampshire, where the series was filmed.
Most of the massive cast returned like a big family reunion, including High Bonneville, Elizabeth McGovern, Maggie Smith, Penelope Wilton, Laura Carmichael, Jim Carter, Phyliss Logan, Sophie McShera, et al.
Success at the box office was all but gauranteed due to the large and highly loyal audience of the watchable “Downton Abbey” from Julian Fellowes and Universal Pictures.
