My Review

“Downsizing” is a silly science fiction comedy-drama motion picture about a couple who decide to undergo a procedure to shrink their bodies to live in a community of small people, all who have undergone the same operation, the goal being to “live small,” which saves money and affords a higher lifestyle. However, complications arise when the wife backs out just before the operation.

The storyline starts off with good intentions and seemingly on the right track when it loses focus and goes off the rails. “Downsizing” quickly becomes a bore and an endurance feat for the two hour and fifteen minute length of the picture. The responsibility rest squarely on the shoulders of producer-director Alexander Payne, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Jim Taylor. Payne had better luck with his excellent effort in 2011, “The Descendants.”

The cast includes Matt Damon, Kristen Wiig, Christoph Waltz, Hong Chau, Jason Sudeikis, Maribeth Monroe, Udo Kier, Rolf Lassgard, Ingjerd Egeberg, and Soren Pilmark. There were interesting cameo appearances by Laura Dern, Neil Patrick Harris, and Margo Martindale. “Downsizing” gets the thumbs down and was a bomb at the box office for Alex Payne and Paramount Pictures.
