“Double Indemnity” is a 1973 remake of the 1944 film noir classic about a housewife who plots to kill her husband and collect a generous insurance settlement. Director Jack Smight (“Harper” 1966) and teleplay writer Steven Bochco based this made-for-television movie directly on the original film rather than on the 1943 novel by James M. Cain. Bochco would go on to create numerous television shows including “Hill Street Blues” (1981-1987) and “L. A. Law” (1986-1994).
Although an inferior product to an old classic, this remake is a watchable movie on its own terms. It has good production values and high quality performances. Richard Crenna, Samantha Eggar, and Lee J. Cobb appear in the roles originated by Fred MacMurray, Barbara Stanwyck, and Edward G. Robinson, respectively.
Co-stars include Robert Webber, Arch Johnson, Kathleen Cody, Joan Pringle, Gene Dynarski, and Ken Renard. “Double Indemnity” was first broadcast on the ABC television network on October 13, 1973, from Groverton Productions and Universal Pictures.
