“Double Indemnity” is a film noir classic about an insurance agent roped into a scheme by his new girl friend to murder her husband and live off of the fraudulent accidental death claims. Director Billy Wilder (“The Major and the Minor” 1942) put together quite a riveting drama starring Fred MacMurray and Barbara Stanwyck in the lead roles. He co-wrote the screenplay with Raymond Chandler, adapted from the 1943 novel of the same name by James M. Cain.
Co-stars include Edward G. Robinson as the insurance company claims adjuster and Jean Heather as Stanwyck’s step-daughter, as well as Porter Hall, Tom Powers, Fortunio Bonanova, Byron Barr, Richard Gaines, John Pilliber, and Raymond Chandler in a cameo appearance. “Double Indemnity” was a success at the box office for Paramount Pictures, and was nominated for seven Academy Awards with no wins.
