My Review

“Donovan’s Brain” is a science fiction horror film that tells the story of an attempt to keep alive the brain of millionaire W. H. Donovan after he is nearly killed in a airplane crash. His assistant is successful at preserving the brain by electrical currents, but as the brain gains strength, it begins to possess people, starting with the assistant. Capable direction and screenplay by Felix Feist (“The Big Trees” 1952).

The cast includes Gene Evans as the millionaire’s aide, Lew Ayres as a scientist working on the case, Nancy Davis as his wife, and Steve Brodie as a reporter catching onto the story. Co-stars include Tom Powers, Lisa K. Howard, Kyle James, Victor Sutherland, and Harlan Warde as a Treasury Dept. agent. The watchable black-and-white thriller “Donovan’s Brain” was a production of Allen Dowling Presents, Dowling Productions Inc., and United Artists.

One of the stars of “Donovan’s Brain” is Nancy Davis, who later married Ronald Reagan, and was the First Lady of California (1967-1975) and the First Lady of the United States (1981-1989). This was one of thirteen feature films that Nancy Davis Reagan starred in or co-starred in during her Hollywood career.
