“Divergent” is predictable and mundane science fiction at it worst. The dull screenplay by Evan Daugherty and Vanessa Taylor, adapted from the 2011 book of the same name by Veronica Roth, seems to borrow elements from “The Hunger Games,” “Harry Potter,” “Ender’s Game,” and “The Matrix” series.
Young actors Shailene Woodley and Theo James are engaging enough as the stars of the show. Their co-stars include Ashley Judd, Jai Courtney, Ray Stevenson, Zoe Kravitz, Miles Teller, Tony Goldwyn, Maggie Q, and Kate Winslet in a different role (for her) as the big boss constantly referred to as Jeanine.
Director Neil Burger (“Limitless” 2011) was at the helm of this boring monstrosity, set in post-apocalyptic Chicago. Windy City residents could be the only interested audience, viewing the producer’s vision of what their city would look like after a nuclear war. It is probably best for movie fans to divert their attention away from Lionsgate’s “Divergent” and do something else with their time.
