Pierce Brosnan bows out gracefully in his fourth and final appearance as James Bond in “Die Another Day.” This was the twentieth 007 movie in the series spread over forty years, which began with “Dr. No” in 1962. It has the usual plot where Bond is saving the United Kingdom and the Free World from destruction, helped by beautiful women in numerous exotic locales.
Director Lee Tamahori (“Mulholland Falls” 1996) and screenwriters Neal Purvis and Robert Wade keep the show loaded with action sequences, with a supporting cast of Halle Berry, Rosamund Pike, Rick Yune, Will Yun Lee, Madonna, Michael Madsen, Colin Salmon, and Toby Stephens, son of Maggie Smith, as Bond villain Gustav Graves. Returnees include Judi Dench as M and Samantha Bond as Miss Moneypenny. John Cleese plays Q, replacing Desmond Llewelyn, who played the role in every Bond film (except “Live and Let Die” 1973) since “From Russia With Love” (1963), the second in the series. He passed away in 1999.
“Die Another Day” was a smash hit at the box office, the highest grossing of all Bond films up to that point. Good news for producers Michael G. Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, Eon Productions, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
