“Devil in a Blue Dress” is a neo-noir mystery film starring Denzel Washington as a World War II veteran in 1948 Los Angeles who becomes drawn into a search for a mysterious woman. Director-screenwriter Carl Franklin (“One False Move” 1992) used a familiar motion picture storyline and turned it into a very exciting drama that has great acting, outstanding production values, and fantastic writing that give the actors good dialogue to perform.
Denzel Washington delivers the goods in the lead role. He has a wide acting range that helps him in this project. Co-stars include Tom Sizemore, Jennifer Beals, Don Cheadle, Maury Chaykin, Joseph Latimore, Terry Kinney, Mel Winkler, Albert Hall, Lisa Nicole Carson, and Beau Starr and John Roselius as LAPD officers. With Elmer Bernstein in charge of music, the watchable melodrama “Devil in a Blue Dress” only broke even at the box office for TriStar Pictures and Sony Pictures Releasing.
