“Desk Set” is a romantic comedy about a library reference clerk whose job is threatened when a computer expert is assigned to automate her department. The two are at odds even as they slowly fall in love with each other. The stars are Katherine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy, delivering per usual in the performance department, helped out with capable direction by Walter Lang (“The King and I” 1956) and a witty script by Phoebe Ephron and Henry Ephron (the parents of future screenwriter Nora Ephron).
The supporting cast consists of Gig Young, Joan Blondell, Dina Merrill, Neva Patterson, Sue Randall, Diana Jergens, Merry Anders, and Ida Moore. “Desk Set” was not successful at the box office for producer Henry Ephron and 20th Century Fox. This was second to last pairing of Spence and Kate, with their final film released in 1967 called “Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner.”
