My Review

“Deliverance” is a thriller movie telling the story of four Atlanta businessmen who decide to canoe down a river valley that will soon be flooded by construction of a dam. They encounter trouble with the locals and the intense drama proceeds from there.

Burt Reynolds, Jon Voight, Ned Beatty, and Ronny Cox play the foursome out for a fun weekend but get more than they bargained for. This is a good example of an ensemble cast with great chemistry. The supporting cast includes Bill McKinney, Billy Redden, James Dickey, Macon McCalman, Herbert “Cowboy” Coward, and Belinda Beatty (wife of Ned Beatty) and Charlie Boorman (son of director John Boorman) as the wife and young son of Voight’s character.

Good direction by John Boorman and creative writing by James Dickey won the film three Academy Awards nominations, Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Film Editing, winning zero. The instrumental song “Dueling Banjos” from the film was a big hit on the record charts. “Deliverance” was very successful at the box office for producer-director John Boorman, Elmer Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
