My Review

“Deepwater Horizon” is an exciting disaster film based on the famous oil rig explosion and the subsequent oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010. This thriller was tightly directed by Peter Berg (“Battleship” 2012); there are few dull moments in the one hour and forty-seven minute movie produced by Summit Entertainment and other independent production companies. The excellent screenplay by Matthew Sand and Matthew Michael Carnahan was based a New York Times article published on Dec. 25, 2010, called “Deepwater Horizon’s Final Hours” by David Barstow, David Rohde, and Stephanie Saul.

The Lionsgate release was modestly successful in theatrical release, but not enough to defer the large production budget. The stars of the show include Mark Wahlberg (one of the producers), John Malkovich, Gina Rodriguez, Dylan O’Brien, Kate Hudson, and Kurt Russell, who is a long way from his start in show business in Disney films like “The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes” (1969).
