“Dazed and Confused” is a coming-of-age drama about life on the last day of a Texas high school in 1976. The graduating class engages in various activities like cruising the neighborhood, going to fast food establishments, smoking marijuana, and having a beer party. Director-screenwriter Richard Linklater (“Bad News Bears” 2005) somehow managed to make this movie a little more than just another “stoner comedy.” It actually tells numerous individual stories, shows an accurate view of high school life, and somehow seems to combine pop art and anthropology.
The ensemble cast includes some who later became big stars, such as Ben Affleck, Matthew McConaughey, Parker Posey, Milla Jovovich, Cole Hauser, Adam Goldberg, Jason London, Anthony Rapp, Joey Lauren Adams, and Renee Zellweger in an uncredited role. The surprisingly watchable “Dazed and Confused” was only modestly successful at the box office for producer Richard Linklater, Detour Filmproduction, Gramercy Pictures, and Universal Studios. In recent years, “Dazed and Confused” has become a cult film classic.
