My Review

“Day One” is a made-for-television docudrama about the Manhattan Project, the research and development of the atomic bomb during World War II. Director Joseph Sargent (“The Karen Carpenter Story” 1989) and teleplay writer David W. Rintels not only showed the relationship between General Leslie Groves and physicist J. Robert Oppenheimer and their building of the bomb. It also went into detail about discussion of the use of the weapon by Truman Administration officials and military leaders.

Excellent performances were registered by Brian Dennehy as Groves and David Strathairn as Oppenheimer. The supporting cast includes Michael Tucker, Hume Cronyn, Hal Holbrook, Barnard Hughes, John McMartin, Anne Twomey, Olek Krupa, Tony Shalhoub, John Pielmeier, Alan Scarfe, and David Ogden Stiers as President Franklin Roosevelt and Richard Dysart as President Harry Truman.

The watchable “Day One” from producer Aaron Spelling, Spelling Television, AT&T, and World International Network was aired on CBS Television in March, 1989.
