My Review

“Day for Night” is a comedy-drama film about the goings-on in the lives of a cast and crew as they are shooting a motion picture. Director-screenwriter Francois Truffaut did an outstanding job of making a film within a film. It is often stated that some of Hollywood’s best films are those whose subject matter is about themselves, i.e., the movie-making business. This film is no exception.

Jacqueline Bisset is the star of the show, playing Pamela, yet also a member of an ensemble cast. She is the only British star in a cast of French and Italian actors, with most of the motion picture in the French language. Co-stars include Valentina Cortese, Dani, Alexandra Stewart, Jean-Pierre Aumont, Jean Champion, Jean-Pierre Leaud, Nike Arrighi, Nathanie Baye, David Markham, Bernard Menez, Zenaide Rossi, Xavier Saint-Macary, Graham Greene (English novelist), and Francois Truffaut as the director of the movie within a movie (“Je Vous Presente Pamela” or “Meet Pamela”).

The term “day for night” refers to the process whereby film footage shot in daytime is made to look as though it was shot at night. “Day for Night” was successful at the box office for a group of French filmmaking concerns including Les Films du Carrosse and Columbia Pictures. It won the Academy Award for the Best Foreign Language Film of 1973. It was also nominated for Best Director (Truffaut), Best Supporting Actress (Cortese), and Best Original Screenplay.
