My Review

“Dave” is a political comedy-drama about a man who is called upon to stand in and impersonate the President of the United States, due a strong physical resemblance, by the Chief Executive’s staff, for their own diabolical purposes, unbeknownst to him.

Director Ivan Reitman (“Ghostbusters” 1984) and screenwriter Gary Ross made a good film with an excellent cast that includes Kevin Kline as Dave Kovic/President William Mitchell, Sigourney Weaver as the First Lady, and Frank Langella and Ving Rhames as the Chief of Staff and Secret Service agent, respectively, the heavies of the piece. Others include Ben Kingsley, Laura Linney, Kevin Dunn, Charles Grodin, Faith Prince, Bonnie Hunt, Tom Dugan, Stephen Root, and Anna Deavere Smith.

Cameo appearances were made by U. S. Senators Chris Dodd, Tom Harkin, Howard Metzenbaum, Paul Simon, Alan K. Simpson, and former House Speaker Tip O’Neal. Show business personalities also did cameos including Jay Leno, Larry King, Ben Stein, Oliver Stone, Helen Thomas, Fred Barnes, Eleanor Clift, Bernard Kalb, Chris Matthews, John McLaughlin, Nina Totenberg, Sandor Vanocur, and Arnold Schwarzenegger, the action movie star who later become Governor of California (2003-2011).

The watchable “Dave” was successful in theatrical release for Northern Lights Entertainment, Donner/Schuler-Donner Productions, and Warner Bros. Pictures.
