“Dark Blue” is a crime drama set in Los Angeles in the days leading up to the Rodney King trial verdict in April, 1992. Due to poor writing by David Ayer and James Ellroy and less than stellar direction by Ron Shelton (“Bull Durham” 1988), the film seems contrived and the nearly two hours duration moves by very slowly.
The acting is just as bad. Terrible performances were turned in by Kurt Russell, Scott Speedman, Michael Michele, Brendan Gleeson, Ving Rhames, Master P, Kurupt, Jonathan Banks, Graham Beckel, and Lolita Davidovich. Russell’s nephew Chapman Way played his son and Los Angeles newscaster Eric Spillman appeared as himself.
The film was a big flop at the box office for United Artists and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. If good drama were a crime, “Dark Blue” couldn’t get arrested.
