My Review

The Best Picture of 1990 is….”Dances With Wolves.” Producer-director Kevin Costner put together this story of a Union soldier who is adopted into the Lakota tribe of the Great Plains in 1863 in the middle of the Civil War. Things go along smoothly until some U. S. Army personnel arrive with designs on the land. Costner did an outstanding job in his directorial debut, winning the Best Director Oscar, with the help of an excellent screenplay by Michael Blake, adapted from his own 1988 novel of the same name.

Costner himself heads the cast as Army Lt. John Dunbar, turning in a good performance while performing the directorial duties. The supporting cast includes Mary McDonnell, Graham Greene, Rodney Grant, Tantoo Cardinal, Michael Speers, Robert Pastorelli, Wes Studi, Jimmy Herman, Charles Rocket, Floyd Red Crowe Westerman, and Nathan Lee Chasing His Horse as Smiles A Lot.

“Dances With Wolves” was a huge block buster in theatrical release for Tig Productions, Majestic Films International, and Orion Pictures. It was nominated for twelve Academy Awards, winning seven: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Adapted Screenplay (Michael Blake), Best Film Editing, Best Sound Mixing, Best Original Score (John Barry, also composer of eleven James Bond films), and Best Cinematography (Dean Semler, for his filming in the stunning scenery of South Dakota and Wyoming).

This was the first western to win Best Picture since “Cimarron” of 1931. It won the Best Picture Oscar of 1990, beating “Goodfellas,” “The Godfather Part III,” “Ghost,” and “Awakenings.” The scenes with Native American dialogue was filmed in the Lakota language with English subtitles, adding authenticity to the watchable “Dances With Wolves.”
