My Review

Producer Sylvester Stallone has come out with a winner in the seventh “Rocky” film. “Creed” has good acting, outstanding character development, a consistent storyline from a well-written screenplay, and focused direction that keeps this two hour-plus film moving rapidly.

MGM and Stallone wisely hired young director Ryan Coogler, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Aaron Covington. The talented Coogler was reunited with star Michael B. Jordan, who appeared in his 2013 picture “Fruitvale Station.” Jordan displays great range as an actor, demonstrating his ability to do heavy drama or lighter action-adventure performances, as in “Fantastic Four” released earlier this year. In this film, he plays Adonis Creed, son of Rocky Balboa’s pal Apollo Creed.

Co-starring with Jordan and Stallone are Tessa Thompson, Phylicia Rashad, Wood Harris, Tony Bellew, Graham McTavish, Andre Ward, Gabriel Rosado, Liev Schreiber’s voice as an HBO 24/7 announcer, and Michael Buffer and Hannah Storm as themselves.

Sylvester Stallone was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his efforts. The very watchable “Creed” was a success at the box office for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer and New Line Cinema, a branch of Warner Bros. Pictures.
