My Review

One of the worst movies of 2016 is without a doubt “Collateral Beauty.” What might be called an “absurdist fantasy drama” tells the story of a man who experiences the tragic death of his daughter and writes letters to Love, Time, and Death. The good intentions of director David Frankel (“The Devil Wears Prada” 2006) and screenwriter Allan Loeb collapse with very poor execution by the director and preposterous and inane plotlines in the script.

The sight of some Hollywood’s top actors performing this nonsense with straight faces is almost laughable. This is definitely a low point for Will Smith, who took the lead role in the project. And Keira Knightly, Jacob Latimore, and Helen Mirren making appearances as Love, Time, and Death seems like a cheap and woke takeoff on Ebenezer Scrooge being visited by Christmas past, present, & future. The supporting cast also includes Edward Norton, Michael Pena, Kate Winslet, and Naomie Harris.

“Collateral Beauty” was a flop at the box office, creating collateral financial damage for David Frankel, New Line Cinema and Warner Bros. Pictures. The film was nominated for Worst Screen Combo at the annual Golden Raspberry Awards, citing the entire cast of “once respected actors.”
