My Review

“Coco Chanel” is a biopic about the life of the famous French fashion designer. Director Christian Duguay went though her life history with heavy emphasis on flashbacks. Shirley MacLaine played the older Chanel, while Italian actress Barbora Bobulova portrayed the younger Coco, taking up the bulk of the screen time. Duguay capably directed the Italian-French-British production, from a good screenplay by Jeffrey Hatcher, Enrico Medioli, and Lea Tafuri.

The supporting cast includes Malcolm MacDowell, Robert Dawson, Oliver Sitruk, Anny Duperey, Cosimo Fusco, Valentina Lodovini, Maggie Steed, and Jean-Claude Dreyfus. The made-for-television movie “Coco Chanel” premiered on the Lifetime cable channel in September, 2008. It was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards: Outstanding Made for Television Movie and Outstanding Lead Actress in a Miniseries or a Movie (MacLaine).
