“Class” is a comedy-drama romantic film that tells the story of a woman who falls into a torrid affair with her son’s college roommate. Director Lewis John Carlino (“The Great Santini” 1979) seems as though he sloppily threw this film together with some comedic elements and some dramatic elements into a new version of “The Graduate” (1967). One cause is the mediocre screenplay by Jim Kouf and David Greenwalt, which seems haphazard and random in its storyline. Nonetheless, the film is watchable and does have some escapist entertainment value.
“Class” is to some extent a vehicle for its star, the beautiful Jacqueline Bisset. Everything rotates around her including co-stars Rob Lowe as her son, Andrew McCarthy as her boyfriend, and Cliff Robertson as the unsuspecting hubby. This is Lowe’s second film and the big screen debuts for McCarthy, John Cusack, Virginia Madsen, Lolita Davidovich, and Casey Siemaszko. Others include Stuart Margolin, Alan Ruck, and Hollywood veteran Fern Persons as Headmistress DeBruel.
With a musical score composed by Elmer Bernstein, “Class” was successful in theatrical release for Orion Pictures.
