“City of Joy” is a well-intentioned movie starring Patrick Swayze as an unhappy American doctor seeking fulfillment helping out in the slums of India. However, producer-director Roland Joffe (“The Killing Fields” 1985) misfires at the helm of the picture with sloppy direction and screenwriter Mark Medoff did a bad writing job in adaptation from the 1985 novel of the same name by Dominique Lapierre.
The supporting cast includes Pauline Collins, Om Puri, Shabana Azmi, Art Malik, and Chitra Sen as the angry woman. All performed with the necessary passion but had bad material to work with. Such is the state of affairs in “City of Joy,” a box office bomb from Allied Filmmakers and Warner Bros. Pictures.
