My Review

“City of Gold” is a documentary about food critic Jonathan Gold and the vast influence of his column on life in Los Angeles and beyond. Producer-director Laura Gabbert and her camera crew followed Gold all around Los Angeles city and county as he visited restaurants large and small doing research for his Los Angeles Times column.

Numerous people were interviewed including his wife (a fellow Journalist), his editor (“Jon is usually late with his column”), and his fellow food critics (“Everywhere I go he has already visited.”) His knowledge of L. A. eateries was exhaustive; one series of columns was called “The Year I Ate Pico Boulevard.” Gold visited every restaurant on that street that goes from downtown Los Angeles to Santa Monica’s beach.

The movie also explores his family life, even his and wife Laurie Ochoa’s philosophy on raising children. This highly interesting and absorbing documentary by Laura Gabbert and IFC Films just whets your appetite for more of the “City of Gold.”
