My Review

“Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story” is a made-for-television movie about the legendary movie star Shirley Temple, who later went on to marry and raise three children, run for Congress, and then embark on an Ambassadorial career, serving as U. S. envoy to Czechoslovakia and to Ghana. Director Nadia Tass and teleplay author Joe Wiesenfeld did a good job putting together this ambitious project adapted from Shirley Temple Black’s 1988 autobiography of the same name.

Ashley Rose Orr was good in the title role; she played Temple as an adult. Samantha Hart played Shirley as a 3-year-old, and Emily Hart filled in as Temple as a teenager. The supporting cast includes Connie Britton and Colin Friels as Gertrude and George Temple, Hinton Battle as Bill “Bojangles” Robinson, William Gluth as Lionel Barrymore, Lucy Taylor as Amelia Earhart, Steven Vidler as Darryl F. Zanuck, Jerome Ehlers as John Ford, Joe Petruzzi as David O. Selznick, and John O’May as Louis B. Mayer.

“Child Star: The Shirley Temple Story” was aired on May 13, 2001, as an episode of ABC’s “The Wonderful World of Disney.” It was a production of Buena Vista Entertainment, with Ambassador Black serving as a consultant to the project.
