The Best Picture of 2002 is…..”Chicago,” one of the weakest films ever to win the Academy’s top award of the year. This trite and one-dimensional storyline was from a mediocre screenplay by Bill Condon with uneven directing by Rob Marshall in his big screen debut. The bright side of this mostly boring movie is the surprisingly good musical performances by Catherine Zeta-Jones, Renee Zellweger, and Richard Gere. The trio, not known for their musical prowess, handled the song-and-dance numbers with a professionalism that could enjoy favorable comparisons to Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
The supporting cast includes Queen Latifah, John C. Reilly, Christine Baranski, Lucy Liu, Chita Rivera, Taye Diggs, Colm Feore, Dominic West, Mya Harrison, Deidre Goodwin, Denise Fay, Susan Meisner, and Jayne Eastwood. It was based on a musical of the same name, that ran on Broadway from 1975-1977, written by John Kander, Fred Ebb, and Bob Fosse.
Besides Best Picture, “Chicago” won four other Oscars: Best Supporting Actress (Zeta-Jones), Best Art Direction, Best Costume Design, and Best Film Editing. It was a hit at the box office for Zadan/Meron Productions, Producer Circle Co., and Miramax Films.
