My Review

“Charro!” is a western drama where Elvis Presley plays a reformed outlaw whose old gang tried to frame him for the theft of a gold-plated cannon, used by Emperor Maximilian against Benito Jaurez. Director-screenwriter Charles Marquis Warren (“Seven Angry Men” 1955) created a film with poor writing and confusing plot lines. This was the final film for Warren before his retirement.

Despite the confusion and mediocrity of the film, Elvis Presley received positive reviews for a good performance. This was the only one of Presley’s thirty movies that he did not sing on screen. Despite this, “Charro!” was successful at the box office for producer Charles Marquis Warren and National General Pictures.

Co-stars include Ina Balin, Victor French, James Sikking, Barbara Werle, Lynn Kellogg, Paul Brinegar, Harry Landers, Tony Young, Solomon Sturges, and James Almanzar as Sheriff Ramsey. Orchestra leader Hugo Montenegro composed the soundtrack for “Charro!”
