My Review

“Charly” is a drama film where Cliff Robertson plays a mentally disabled adult who undergoes experimental surgery to improve his condition. Robertson’s performance is exemplary and he received the Academy Award for Best Actor. Producer-director Ralph Nelson (“Father Goose” 1964) did an excellent job at the helm of this picture, with a good screenplay by Stirling Silliphant, based on a 1959 short story “Flowers for Algernon” by Daniel Keyes.

The supporting cast includes Claire Bloom, Dick Van Patton, Leon Janney, Lilia Skala, Ruth Patricia White, and Barney Martin as Hank. Martin would later receive widespread notoriety in a recurring role as Morty Seinfeld, father of Jerry Seinfeld, on the NBC sitcom “Seinfeld” (1991-1998). Ravi Shankar handled the musical score of “Charly,” successful at the box office for ABC Pictures, Robertson and Associates, Selmur Productions, and Cinerama Releasing Corporation.
