My Review

“Champions” is an entertaining sports comedy about a minor league basketball coach who gets into legal trouble and is told by the judge to either coach a team of players with intellectual disabilities or go to jail. He chooses the coaching job.

Director Bobby Farrelly and screenwriter Mark Rizzo put together a winsome motion picture that provides good dialogue with lots of laughs for the actors with intellectual disabilities as well as for the general cast members.

Performers include Woody Harrelson, Kaitlin Olson, Ernie Hudson, Cheech Marin, Mike Smith, Madison Tevlin, and sportscasters Scott Van Pelt and Jalen Rose as themselves.

“Champions” is Bobby Farrelly’s first solo directorial job, as he previously was at the helm of movies with his brother Peter Farrelly, including “Dumb and Dumber” (1994) and “Kingpin” (1996), which also starred Harrelson. The watchable “Champions” was a modest hit in theatrical release for Bobby Farrelly and Universal Pictures.
