My Review

The Best Picture of 1933 is…..”Cavalcade.” This epic historical drama tells the story of an English couple and their family, friends, and servants from 1899 to 1933, showing their involvement in the major events of the times including the Boer War, death of Queen Victoria, sinking of the Titanic, and World War I.

Director Frank Lloyd did a great job at the helm of this picture, keeping the nearly two-hour running time flow smoothly, from a wonderful screenplay by Reginald Berkeley. The cast is headed by English actors Clive Brook and Diana Wynyard, whose performances were more than convincing as they gracefully aged some 34 years, no doubt helped out by the Make-up Department. Other cast includes Una O’Connor, Herbert Mundin, Beryle Mercer, Irene Brown, et al.

“Cavalcade” was successful at the box office for Fox Film Corporation. The movie won three Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Art Direction. This was the only film from Fox Film Corporation to win the Best Picture Oscar before it merged with 20th Century Pictures in 1935 to form 20th Century Fox.

It is also interesting to note that “Cavalcade” was produced before the Motion Picture Production Code went into effect, starting in 1934 and lasting until the hippie era of 1968.
