“Cat on a Hot Tin Root” is a classic story of family drama at the patriarch’s birthday party at the family estate in Mississippi. Director Richard Brooks (“Blackboard Jungle” 1955) got some exceptional performances out of a talented ensemble cast in this adaptation of Tennessee William’s 1955 play.
Elizabeth Taylor, Paul Newman, Burl Ives, Judith Anderson, Jack Carson, Madeleine Sherwood, Larry Gates, Vaughn Taylor were all at the top of their game. This watchable picture is delightful viewing, the third highest-grossing film of 1958 for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
“Cat” was the final project at MGM for Brooks (who also co-wrote the screenplay with James Poe). He then went on to independent films, directing such pictures as “Elmer Gantry” (1960) and “In Cold Blood” (1967).
