“Casino Royale” is a comedy spy movie where David Niven stars as James Bond, the 007 agent coaxed out of retirement to battle the evil organization SMERSH, headed by his own nephew Jimmy Bond, comically portrayed by Woody Allen. Five other agents also pose as 007 to confuse SMERSH: Evelyn Tremble (Peter Sellers), Vesper Lynd (Ursula Andress), Miss Moneypenny (Barbara Bouchet), Mata Bond (Joanna Pettet), and The Detainer (Daliah Lavi).
As one can easily tell by this introduction, confusion reigns in this film with unfocused direction by five directors: John Huston, Kenneth Hughes, Joseph McGrath, Robert Parrish, and Val Guest. Producer Charles K. Feldman did a poor job in putting together this adaptation of Ian Fleming’s first James Bond novel, published in 1953. Eon Productions later purchased the rights to the novel and came out with a “regular” 007 story in 2006’s “Casino Royale,” which served as the first of Daniel Craig’s five Bond movies.
Other notables in this huge cast includes Orson Welles, Jacqueline Bisset, William Holden, Deborah Kerr, Charles Boyer, George Raft, Jean Paul Belmondo, John Huston, Kurt Kasznar, and Terrence Cooper. Uncredited cameo appearances were made by Burt Kwouk, Caroline Munro, John Wells, Peter O’Toole, Geraldine Chaplin, and the movie debuts of Angelica Huston, covering screen shots of Deborah Kerr’s hands, and David Prowse as Frankenstein’s monster. Prowse later became famous as Darth Vader (voiced by James Earl Jones) in the “Star Wars” movies.
“Casino Royale” received one Oscar nomination for the song “The Look of Love,” performed by Dusty Springfield and composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David. Bacharach was also nominated for a Grammy Award for the film’s soundtrack. The disordered, yet entertaining and watchable “Casino Royale,” was quite successful at the box office for producer Charles K. Feldman, Famous Artists Productions, and Columbia Pictures.
