The innovative partnership of Pixar and Walt Disney continues with “Cars 3.” This third in the series that began in 2006 with a second installment in 2011 returns to its roots in this second sequel with further insights into the life of Lightening McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) and his mentor Doc Hudson, who appears in flashbacks from unused recordings of the late Paul Newman from the first “Cars.”
Brian Fee made a notable directorial debut in “Cars 3.” His experience as an animator, storyboard artist, and prop designer has paid off in a big way. There is a marvelous screenplay by Kiel Murray (co-writer of the original), Bob Peterson, and Mike Rich.
Celebrity voices joining Owen Wilson and Paul Newman include Armie Hammer, Larry the Cable Guy, Cristela Alonzo, Bonnie Hunt, Chris Cooper, Guido Quaroni, Tony Shalhoub, John Ratzenberger, Bob Costas, Margo Martindale, Cheech Marin, Katherine Helmond, and race car drivers Jeff Gordon and Richard Petty. “Cars 3” won the race at the box office for Pixar and Walt Disney Pictures, premiering at number one on its release on June 16, 2017.
