My Review

“Cars 2” continues the action of the original “Cars” (2006) with a story that has Mater mistaken for a spy by British intelligence officers. This takes place in Japan, where Mater is assisting his friend Lightening McQueen compete in the World Grand Prix. The computer-animated spy comedy action proceeds from there.

Director John Lasseter (“Toy Story” 1995) has outdone himself this time, creating a very entertaining movie that has a great story, plenty of action, lots of laughts, and eye-popping 3D special effects. This, however, would prove to be his final directing job for Pixar and Disney. He continued work in the producing end of the business, left Pixar in 2018, and was hired to run Skydance Animation in 2019.

The marvelous cast includes Larry the Cable Guy as Mater, Owen Wilson as Lightening McQueen, Michael Caine as Finn, Emily Mortimer as Holly, as well as John Turturro, Eddie Izzard, Thomas Kretschmann, Joe Mantegna, Bruce Campbell, Tony Shalhoub, Franco Nero, Vanessa Redgrave, Bonnie Hunt, Cheech Marin, Edie McClurg, Jeff Gordon, John Ratzenberger, Katherine Helmond, and John Lasseter as John Lassetire.

The film had a fitting tribute to the late Paul Newman, whose Doc Hudson character was integral in the first film. “Cars 2,” the 12th animated film from Pixar, made a lot of money at the box office for Pixar Animation and Walt Disney Studios.
