My Review

Celebrity pranks and shenanigans are sprinkled throughout the comedic romp “Cannonball Run II.” Director-screenwriter Hal Needham put together this sequel with the same flavor as the original “Cannonball Run” of 1981.

This picture was the last of the formula comedy films for Burt Reynolds, in a string of projects that included “Smokey and the Bandit.” He appeared in mostly drama films after this. The picture also marked the last big screen appearances of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, and, along with Sammy Davis Jr. and Shirley MacLaine, the final movie that featured the Rat Pack together.

Other interesting pairings include Don Knotts and Tim Conway as CHP officers, and Sid Ceasar, Louis Nye, and Foster Brooks as three fishermen in a rowboat. The vast supporting cast includes Dom DeLuise, Jamie Farr, Telly Savalas, Ricardo Montalban, Marilu Henner, Catherine Bach, Susan Anton, Jackie Chan, Richard Kiel, Tony Danza, Mel Tillis, Jack Elam, Charles Nelson Reilly, Alex Rocco, Abe Vigoda, Henry Silva, Jim Nabors, Molly Picon, Joe Theismann, Arte Johnson, Fred Dryer, Doug McClure, Dub Taylor, and Sinatra pal Jilly Rizzo as the Chairman of the Board’s personal assistant.

While not exactly Shakespeare, Warner Bros. Pictures’ box office hit “Cannonball Run II” is watchable fun and zaniness featuring some of our favorite stars of days gone by.
