My Review

“Can You Ever Forgive Me?” is the true story of a writer who resorts to forging letters from deceased authors and celebrities when her writing career falls into a prolonged slump. Melissa McCarthy delivers an exceptional performance under the guidance of director Marielle Heller (“A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” 2019). The lucid screenplay by Nicole Holofcener and Jeff Whitty was adapted from the 2008 memoir of the same name by Lee Israel.

This lead role is something different for McCarthy. She has quite a wide acting range, as many of her parts are comedic in nature. Co-stars include Richard E. Grant, Dolly Wells, Jane Curtain, Ben Falcone, Anna Deavere Smith, Stephen Spinella, Christian Navarro, and Erik LaRay Harvey as an FBI agent. The watchable “Can You Ever Forgive Me?” was not successful at the box office, as it is an art house cinema favorite, from TSG Entertainment, Archer Gray Productions, and Fox Searchlight Pictures.

The film earned three Academy Award nominations, including Best Actress (McCarthy), Best Supporting Actor (Grant), and Best Adapted Screenplay. Melissa McCarthy also won the Razzie Redeemer Award from the Golden Raspberry Awards.
