My Review

“Camille” is a romantic melodrama film about a young woman who rises from poverty to become the wife of a wealthy baron, but eventually fall in love with a younger man. Director George Cukor (“David Copperfield” 1935) put together this stylish drama that heavily relies upon the charisma and the screen presence of Greta Garbo for its appeal. Garbo’s captivating persona fills the movie screen in a way no other performer has been able to match before or since.

The supporting cast includes Henry Daniell as the baron, Robert Taylor as the boyfriend, Lionel Barrymore as his father, Elizabeth Allan, Jessie Ralph, Lenore Ulric, Rex O’Malley, and Laura Hope Crews as Prudence Duvernoy. Crews would go on to fame and fortune in three more years as Aunt Pittypat of “Gone With the Wind” (1939). “Camille” was very successful at the box office for producer Irving Thalberg and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.
