In “Call Northside 777,” James Stewart plays a reporter who is convinced that a man in prison for eleven years is innocent, and opens an investigation to prove it. This movie is based on a true story, and perfect for Stewart, who specializes in this type of role. The film was brilliantly directed by Henry Hathaway (“The Dark Corner” 1946) from a marvelous script by Leonard Hoffman, Quentin Reynolds, Jerome Cady, and Jay Dratler.
The supporting cast includes Richard Conte as the convict, Lee J. Cobb as the newspaper editor, Moroni Olson as the Pardon Board Chairman, Helen Walker as Stewart’s wife, as well as Betty Garde, Michael Chapin, Howard Smith, John McIntire, Paul Harvey, J. M. Kerrigan. Several actors in uncredited roles are E. G. Marshall, Thelma Ritter, Lionel Stander, and Samuel S. Hinds as the Judge.
The watchable black-and-white documentary-style movie “Call Northside 777” was popular at the box office for producer Otto Lang and 20th Century Fox. It was narrated by Truman Bradley.
