“Cahill United States Marshall” is one of John Wayne’s last films, telling the story of driven lawman who neglects his two sons. Upon return from one of his many absences, he finds that they are involved with an outlaw and mixed up in a bank robbery. This excellent vehicle for the Duke has great production values thanks to producer Michael Wayne (his son), director Andrew V. McLaglen (“Chisum” 1970), and screenwriters Barney Slater, Harry Julian Fink, and Rita M. Fink.
The cast includes Gary Grimes and Clay O’Brien as his sons, George Kennedy as the heavy of the piece, as well as Neville Brand, Marie Windsor, Royal Dano, Denver Pyle, Jackie Coogan, Harry Carey Jr., Paul Fix, Dan Vadis, Morgan Paull, Pepper Martin, and James Nusser, who portrayed the town drunk on the television show “Gunsmoke” from 1956 to 1970. He plays Dr. Jones here.
A great musical score by Elmer Bernstein and beautiful cinematography by Joseph F. Biroc shot on location in Durango, Mexico, all add to the high quality of “Cahill United States Marshall,” a hit at the box office for Batjac Productions and Warner Bros. Pictures.
