My Review

“Cactus Flower” is an amusing romantic comedy about a dentist involved in a complex love triangle. He tires of his young girl friend, and tells her that he is married with children. He asks his secretary to pose as his wife, and the lies compound as more people become involved.

Director Gene Saks (“Barefoot in the Park” 1967) and screenwriter I. A. L. Diamond put together a well done comedy, with the core cast of Walter Matthau, Ingrid Bergman, and Goldie Hawn, who won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in her first film role. She was previously only noted for being a regular on television’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In.”

The supporting cast includes Jack Weston, Rick Lenz, Vito Scotti, Irene Hervey, Irwin Cherone, Eve Bruce, and Matthew Saks as Ingrid Bergman’s nephew. Saks is the son of director Gene Saks and actress Bea Arthur of television’s “Maude.” The watchable “Cactus Flower” was a hit at the box office for Frankovich Productions and Columbia Pictures, with Quincy Jones composing the musical score. The film was remade in 2011 called “Just Go With It” starring Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston.
