My Review

“Burden” is the highly dramatic story of a young white man raised in the Ku Klux Klan in South Carolina, and his attempts to leave, facing heavy persecution from family and friends. He is aided by the pastor of a local black Baptist church. Director-screenwriter Andrew Heckler did an outstanding job of putting together this film, which is based on a true story.

The cast is headed by Garrett Hedlund in the title role of Mike Burden, and Forrest Whitaker as the Baptist Rev. David Kennedy. Excellent performances by the pair, and the supporting cast of Tom Wilkinson, Usher Raymond, Crystal R. Fox, Andrea Riseborough, Dexter Darden, Tess Harper. “Burden” is a very watchable independent film by Andrew Heckler, who made his directorial debut here. Good job!
