My Review

“Brooklyn” is a cross-culturally love story set in the early 1950’s in New York, between an Irish immigrant woman and an Italian-American man. Their engagement is threatened when she must return to Ireland due to her sister’s death, and efforts by relatives to keep her there. This film is very watchable indeed with good production values and great character development by director John Crowley (“Closed Circuit” 2013) and screenwriter Nick Hornby, adapted from the 2009 novel by Colm Toibin.

The cast delivered in the performance department, especially the two lead actors, Saoirse Ronan and Emory Cohen. Good chemistry by the pair. Others include Domhnall Gleeson, Jim Broadbent, Julie Walters, Jane Brennan, Fiona Glascott, Jessica Pare, among others. “Brooklyn” was successful at the box office, and an independent production from several companies including BBC Films, Telefilm Canada, Irish Film Board, HanWay Films, and others.
