My Review

Gene Kelly is in top form in MGM’s classic musical “Brigadoon.” Gene Kelly and Van Johnson play two Americans on vacation in Scotland when they stumble upon a mysterious town that appears in the mist only one day every one hundred years. If they find romance, they must decide to stay or return to their normal life. Director Vincente Minnelli (“Meet Me in St. Louis” 1944) does an outstanding job on this glossy and sentimental tale.

The screenplay was written by Alan Jay Lerner, adapted from the 1947 musical he wrote with Frederick Loewe. Co-stars include Cyd Charisse, Elaine Stewart, Barry Jones, Hugh Laing, Albert Sharpe, Virginia Bosler, and Eddie Quinlan. Appearing in uncredited roles are Madge Blake, George Chakiris, Stuart Whitman. “Brigadoon” was not a success in theatrical release for producer Arthur Freed and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. It was nominated for three Oscars, with zero wins for set decoration, sound, and costume design.
