Producer-director-screenwriter Mike White (“Year of the Dog” 2007) put together an amusing comedy-drama film about a middle-aged man comparing his relatively modest career success to those of four old friends: A retired millionaire, a White House staffer, a hedge fund owner, and a Hollywood director.
Ben Stiller gives us his usual measured performance from White’s high quality material. Stiller has good chemistry with Austin Abrams as his teenage son who is trying to get into Harvard. The supporting cast includes Luke Wilson, Michael Sheen, Jemaine Clement, and Mike White (this film’s director playing a director!) as the four friends, Jenna Fischer as his wife, and Jimmy Kimmel as himself.
Mike White shares producer credits with Brad Pitt and Dede Gardner in this watchable independent motion picture production.
