My Review

“Born on the Fourth of July” is quite an epic biographical film about the life of anti-Vietnam War activist Ron Kovic. Based on his 1976 autobiography of the same name, the story covers his life from the 1950’s to the 1970’s, detailing his childhood, his military service in Vietnam which lead to paralysis, and his transition to anti-war activist. Whatever one may feel about his politics, the fact is that director Oliver Stone did an excellent job at the helm of the motion picture, delivering on production values, good writing, and excellent performances.

Tom Cruise heads the cast in the title role with an amazing job in the lead role. He was nominated for the Best Actor Oscar, one of eight nominations. The two winners were Best Film Editing and Oliver Stone for Best Director. Six nominees did not win including Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay (Stone and Kovic), Best Cinematography, Best Sound, and Best Original Score (John Williams).

The supporting cast includes William Dafoe, Kyra Sedgwick, Raymond J. Barry, Jerry Levine, Stephen Baldwin, Bob Gunton, Anne Bobby, Reg E. Cathey, Tom Sizemore, Tom Berenger, Vivica Fox, and Wayne Knight. “Born on the Fourth Of July” was successful in theatrical release for producer Oliver Stone, Ixtlan Productions, and Universal Pictures.
