My Review

The fascinating life of movie star Hedy Lamarr is the subject of the documentary film “Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story.” Producer-director-screenwriter Alexandra Dean put together this comprehensive look at Lamarr’s life including her birth and childhood in Vienna to Jewish parents; her motion picture career, including clashes with Louis B. Mayer and Cecil B. DeMille; her six marriages; interviews with her two children; and her scientific aptitude that led her to develop (with songwriter George Antheil) “frequency hopping,” a method of transmitting radio signals by quick switching of channel carriers, used by the U. S. military in World War II.

They applied for a patent with the government. The technology was later used in wifi, cell phones, and other modern inventions. She never spoke of it in interviews, until four cassette tapes were discovered with Lamarr chatting with journalist Fleming Meeks about her invention and other topics.

“Bombshell: The Hedy Lamarr Story” is an engrossing and watchable film from television and movie documentary producer-director Alexandra Dean.
