My Review

“Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” is a comedy-drama film about two couples dealing with the shifting mores of the 1960’s. One couple, Bob & Carol Sanders (Robert Culp and Natalie Wood), return home from a retreat with a willingness to look into subjects like open marriage. They find their friends Ted & Alice Henderson (Elliot Gould and Dyan Cannon) less accepting of the idea and describe them as “repressed.”

And so goes the story in this well-directed film by Paul Mazursky, who co-wrote the screenplay with Larry Tucker and got good performances from the cast. The movie was nominated for four Oscars: Best Screenplay, Best Cinematography (Charles Lang), Best Supporting Actor (Gould), and Best Supporting Actress (Cannon).

The musical score was handled by Quincy Jones, who included two famous songs: “What the World Needs Now is Love” (by Burt Bacharach and Hal David, performed by Jackie DeShannon) and “I Know That My Redeemer Liveth” (from Handel’s Messiah, performed by Sarah Vaughn).

Co-stars include Greg Mullavey, Lee Bergere, K. T. Stevens, Celeste Yarnall, Lynn Borden, Andre Phillippe, Garry Goodrow, and Leif Garrett in an uncredited role as the young son of Gould and Cannon. “Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice” was successful in theatrical release for producer Larry Tucker, Frankovich Productions, and Columbia Pictures.
